Motion was made to approve the pension and insurance decision. The church will absorb $350.00 per month toward dependent coverage. The employee will pay $160.00 per month for member and spouse or $263.50 per month for member and family for insurance costs.The motion was moved, accepted and passed.

Motion was made to delegate to the Mission Committee decisions to re-allocate designated mission funds (maximum $5000.00) that exceed the amount needed for a particular project or mission. The motion was moved, accepted and passed.

Approved the request from Janet Kobar, Moderator of Presbyterian Women to have Becky Bros serve communion at the Presbyterian Women’s Fall Retreat on Thursday, October 27. A letter will be sent by Clerk of Session, Orv Liesman, to Janet giving her approval by Session to allow Becky to serve communion.

Motion was made to approve the Christmas Service schedule as follows:

Mission Outreach: Elder Becky Bros

  • Presented Session with a mission chart (see attached)
  • There will be about 6 people going on the Mission Trip to Cuba. The dates are January 26th – 31st. They are working on the list of events. The original cost of $1100.00 has been cut to around $800.00 (hopefully a bit more).
  • We have added Operation Shoebox as one of our endorsed missions.
  • We have increased the amount of children for Feed the Children to 88 starting in October.
  • Martin Luther King Scholarship Fund follows a teen through college.

Congregational Care: Elder Lynn Miller

  • Memorial Service Ministry has been overwhelmed with Saturday services. They are cheerfully sharing the responsibility to lighten the load for everyone. The team is splitting into groups so no one has the total responsibility of working every service.
  • Extended Table Ministry is open to new volunteers (former deacons and elders)
  • Pastor Dave has started a new grief support class and they are using a series called “Your Journey from Mourning to Joy.”
  • Healing Service is October 9th at 4:00 p.m. Individual prayer is available upon request.
  • Training a new team of Stephen Ministers and 3 former trained Stephen Ministers are joining the Team. 
  • Lynn is currently working on a policy for walk-ins requesting aid.
  • The ministry of deacons is set forth in scripture as one of compassion, witness and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ. Her hope is that the Session will receive and prayerfully consider the addition with a loving heart when fully presented. 

Congregational Life: Elder Judy Etheridge (not present but a report was handed out)

  • Ministry coaches have been selected to serve as mentors to the new members taken in at the new member classes. These coaches will strive to help new members become immersed in the life of the church.  It is the goal to get each member involved in at least one activity. These coaches will get their first people after the October 16th new member class. 
  • The Presbyterian Women have been working all summer setting up their budget and mission goals. The Coordinating Team met on the 6th under the leadership of new Moderator, Janet Kobar. Their annual PW retreat will be held on October 27 with the theme “Looking at Jesus Through a Different Lens.” All are invited and invitations will be sent to other churches. The Art Show and Tea are scheduled for January and February respectively.
  • The PW hopes to have a fundraiser. They would like to see note cards with an image of the church. They hope to get Sharon Hay to create the image. This project will coincide with promotions of the 2017 celebration of our 25th anniversary. Circle meetings will restart this month. 
  • The Spirited Singles are meeting and are still trying to secure a leadership person,however, volunteers are currently working to keep the group going and meeting monthly.

  • A personnel plan for Theresa Strickland was discussed.  Her leave is effective immediately. Compensation was reduced to 30 hours a week. Benefits remain unchanged. Vickie Ruddell will be monitoring her progress. A motion was made to accept this plan.  The motion was made, accepted and passed.

Adult Discipleship: Elder Bob Peacock – In Bob Peacock’s absence, Pastor Mike Smith reported that small groups are again forming and a “spiritual get away” is being planned.

Youth and Children: Elder Jim Crutchfield (see attached report) – Pastor Jeff opened with a word to lead us into the youth ministry discussion. Jim led us in a discussion on the need for a youth program and Youth Director. This was an open discussion with everyone stating pros and cons about a youth program in our retirement area. Funding of this position was the Finance Committee’s concern. After much talk, it was decided we should ask for God’s guidance, control of our expectations, empower the search committee and search for the right Youth Director, either full time or part time.

  • Denny Dennison is now living at Buffalo Crossings. He is doing much better.

Ministry Areas

Fellowship:  Elder Judy Etheridge

  • PW Retreat will be held in the Fellowship Hall on February 25th. The cost is $15.00.
  • The PW Tea is scheduled in April. 
  • The 101 class will be Sunday, January 24th.  The expected attendance is 55 people.
  • Welcome Center and Sunday Café schedules will be out soon. There was a good response to the plea from the bulletin.  
  • Pictorial Church Directory will be handled by the church website.  This will make the knowledge of possible volunteers easier because of flexibility in changing information. 
  • The exercise classes on Thursdays are going well. Interval training is at 8:30 a.m. and yoga is at 2:00 p.m.
  • Mixed Golf Scramble, Glenn and Laurie Dennison are coordinators.  Glenn is heading up the Men’s Golf group.

Pastors have been calling visitors and have had positive feedback. 

Congregational Care: Elder Lynn Miller

  • Healing Ministry submits a weekly report.  They stress prayer requests have priority over an agenda. Weekly prayers offered are healing prayer, cursing cancer, uplifting and angelic protection as their closing prayer.
  • Stephen Ministry will have a guest speaker, Amy C. from the Tri-County Caregiver Resource Center, at their January 26th regular meeting.
  • We are researching following through in the area of the Congregational Care Ministry. We will report our findings when we feel properly prepared. 

Adult Discipleship: Elder Bob Peacock

  • Updated status of classes.

Mission Outreach: Elder Becky Bros

  • Wycliffe is coming to North Lake on January 26th.  The response has been slow despite a great publicity effort. 
  • STOP HUNGER will be on January 30th.  There has been a good response to packing.  They have received $5,500 from other churches.  We are waiting on a report from Dennis regarding North Lake.
  • February will be Undie Sunday collection.
  • March we will begin Back Pack collection.
  • SOZO playground has been ordered. Gene Blomquist finished Maggie’s house and other jobs.  
  • Cuba update – March FAB, Mercedes will be here.  The Kennedy’s will host her.  She will plan to be in church on February 28th and also at FAB.  Mercedes will be part of the program. 
  • We will start working on our next trip and will be taking Spanish classes.
  • The first partnership agreement will be presented to the next session for approval. 
  • Pastor Marlin from the First Church will be visiting next month.

  • We met January 5th.  We discussed filling the position vacated by John Bros. 
  • Carol Potter, Janet Kobar, Barbara Stickler and Sue Kirkpatrick were nominated. 
  • The committee decided to invite Sue Kirkpatrick and the invitation was accepted to join the Nominating Committee.
  • The committee will announce the nomination at the Congregational Meeting in February.

• LOGOS:

LOGOS has greatly improved by the new schedule.

The children eat with table parents.

Bible studies are split and tailored for K-2 and 3-5th grade.

Dancercize is a new activity.

Puppets are limited to 5th graders only.

Basketball, soccer, arts and crafts are other choices.

Registration is still at 60+.

Leadership stressing fruits of the spirit behavior with some success.

Raising hands for quiet being replaced by rhythm clap/echo.

Hats off to Susan Burton for her leadership.

Other items:

  • Pastor Mike and Jim Crutchfield are working with Pastor Jeff and the Personnel Committee on Keenan’s results from his 6 month evaluation.
  • Mike Smith, Susan Burton and Jim Crutchfield are working on the nursery personnel issue.
  • They are working to recruit new adults with some success.
  • The Dutch door issue needs to be fast tracked.

Corporate items:

  • NLPC has been inundated with secular concerts.
  • We need 30+ host families for Indiana University’s concert March 11th.
  • Lack of access to platform on Sundays is costing attendance at functions. Do we continue?
  • Proposed draft of NLPC emergency plan – we need simple instructions for everyone in emergency situations.

  • We are actively serving the congregation this Christmas Season.  All our ministries are ready to assist those in need.
  • Pastor Mike and I, as Pastoral Care Elde,r will be attending a ‘Soul Shop’ workshop on Suicidal Desperation on January 26, 2016.  A report will follow after workshop.
  • I am prayerfully considering requesting a name change to Pastoral Care.  I would like to change name to ‘Congregational Care.’

Mission Outreach: Elder Becky Bros

  • January – plans for the Wycliffe celebration are moving ahead nicely.  All the churches in the area have received a note to save the date.  We will have an insert the first Sunday in January.  Newspaper ads will be paid for.  At the end of the month I will start a notice in the bulletin for help that day.
  • STOP HUNGER – beginning of January will be advertising more.
  • Cuba – reasons we picked Caigbarien for partnership:
  • Pastor Edelberto worked for government and knows how to push the limit.
  • Prayer houses and gift of evangelism
  • Kids of all ages love him and youth respect him and he isn’t afraid to talk to them about life, sex, etc. and has rooms to take the youth.
  • Wants to expand food lunch program
  • The neighborhood knows him and the elders
  • Our partnership right now with the church is prayer.
  • FAB in March will be Cuba Night -  Mercedes will be coming to see our church.
  • The plans will be to involve the whole church.  We have the children making coloring books for Mercedes to take back.  We want to start a mission trip for the Youth in about a year.
  • We will be helping with plumbing needs and mattresses, if possible.

  • Extended Table had a donation from Dee Adams, chair of Extended Table Ministry along with Bob Kimbrough have purchased 3 travelling communion kits in memory of Dee’s husband.
  • Stephen Ministry has new care givers that are very active.  This ministry is capable of serving more receivers.
  • The Buddy System is always working to share God’s love with the North Lake family.
  • Homebound Veterans Pilot Program “Veterans Visiting Veterans” is a new ministry that arose from Operation Homebound.  Tom Miller is heading this program.

Youth and Children Discipleship: Elder Jim Crutchfield

  • Susan Burton, Director of the Children’s Ministry, is officially starting on January 1st, 2016.  She will shadow Sunday School, LOGOS, and all other K-5 programs through December.
  • Susan and Keenan will share office space formerly used for Youth Bible Study.
  • LOGOS resumes this week.
  • Rehab of Youth spaces is underway.
  • The Pancake breakfast, bake sale and auction was very successful.  They raised $1700.00 for the youth. 
  • “Not So Scary Halloween” night at Lady Lake ball fields introduced North Lake to many families. 
  • Christmas Night @ North Lake is proceeding at breakneck speed. 
  • Promotional approaches have been finalized. 
  • Mike Snow is working on finding strolling carolers.

Corporate items:

  • The Narthex and Fellowship Hall decorations are being prepared. 
  • The new nativity set will be displayed the first Sunday of Advent. 
  • Volunteers are needed for “Light the Campus”.
  • Tickets for Tim Zimmerman and the King’s Brass will go on sale before Christmas. Tickets are $15.00 each (children are free and adult scholarships are available.)

  • Chris Endsley was hired as the church organist starting on November 8.
  • The Children’s Ministry requested that they would like to create a Children’s Wing.  This will require some painting, a new door, signage and children’s furniture.  It will also require moving furniture at times.  Designated LOGOS funds will be used to cover expenses.  
  • A motion was made, seconded and approved unanimously to create a Children’s Wing.
  • Discussed transportation problems for Wednesday afternoon LOGOS program.  Tom will explore options and bring suggestions to Finance Committee and Session for approval.
  • Children’s Ministry and some mothers voiced concerns about safety in front of the church when the youth are playing there.  Tom will get answers to the problem and discuss them at a future Session meeting.

Associate Pastor’s Report by Mike Smith:

  • There has been a good response from the calls for the Communication cards. 
  • Spirit in congregation and staff is high.

Youth and Children Discipleship: Elder Jim Crutchfield

  • Sunday School is averaging over 26 a week. 
  • LOGOS has doubled (30 to 60)registration K-5th grade participants this month.
  • Beginning to track attendance at all activities.  Youth also tracked for participation in mission and retreat opportunities. 
  • “Not So Scary Halloween Fall Fest” at Lady Lake will be this Saturday.  North Lake will provide gifts and awards.  Prizes will give an opportunity to get the word out regarding North Lake activities, times and services.
  • A prime candidate to fill the K-5th Christian Education position has been chosen. Interviewing and finalizing procedure will occur on Monday, October 26.  If formally selected, the new hire will train with Judy Truscott during December and officially begin the work on January 1, 2016.
  • North Lake concert, Music Mission Kiev, raised $7,300 for their missions in Ukraine, including aid to widows, orphans and refugees.
  • The Music Committee is holding $800.00 to cover concert overhead expenses.

Ministry: Elder Charlotte Hornback

  • At the October 13, 2015 Nominating Committee, they unanimously chose Lynn Miller and John T. Smith as elders for the Class of 2016.  
  • Elder biographies will be in the bulletin when Session sets a date for the Annual Meeting.
  • They discussed replacement of Nominating Committee members.  Decision will be made when it is determined which elders will be replaced.

Pastoral Care: Elder Lynn Miller

  • Healing Team – Sandy Emery led devotions and discussed Romans 4:20-22 re: Faith.  The team prayed the Healing Prayer, the Cursing Cancer Prayer, and the Uplifting Prayer.  Their next meeting will be on October 21. The next Healing Service will be November 4th.
  • Parish Nurses – 56 people received either/and flu or pneumonia shots at our October FAB dinner.  
  • Stephen Ministry – Joyce Stull was welcomed as a new Stephen Minister.  Joyce is a veteran, trained Stephen Minister.  A new training program is underway and being well received by participants. 

Mission Outreach: Elder Becky Bros

  • Missions/ Presbyterian Women/ FAB Tuesday collaborated on the cookbook program.  Sales were great.
  • Donation pails on tables received $333.00 contributed to the Lifeboat Project.
  • Presbyterian Women will handle the handbag project.
  • Mountain TOP, Mission of the Month, had a best ever attendance of 22 people. A Mountain TOP program for Lady Lake is being developed.  3 homes in the Ocala Forest and 1 in Lady Lake are ready to be worked on.
  • We are now planning the playground for the new mentoring center in the Ocala Forest.  Christmas Eve love offering will provide funding.
  • The Mission Team meets the first Wednesday of every month. This month was the 2016 budget.
  • November and December will be dedicated to Christmas season outreaches at North Lake.
  • January will kick off with Wycliffe coming here and we pack for STOP Hunger.

Adult Discipleship: Elder Bob Peacock

  • The Enlightenment Series began September 27.  These classes had the following results:

Worship: Elder Rose Gorman

  • Discussions are on-going regarding the placement of fresh flowers for memorials and dedications.  The most overt and secure place for them would be outside the Fellowship Hall on the ledge to the left and in front of the handicapped ramp.  Donators have been informed of this decision.
  • An alternative method of distributing the communion elements suggested by Elder Gorman would require an expenditure of $8,718.66.  Rose will follow up on the suggested change.

Congregational Life: Elder Judy Etheridge  

  • Spirited Singles had 100 attendees following reorganization.
  • Have a new shepherd coordinator, Sandy Rice. Hope all neighborhoods will all have a telephone tree by the end of the year.
  • Presbyterian Women sold all 500 cookbooks. $3,500 was donated to the Lifeboat project. 
  • FAB Dinner attendance is up. Follow up calls to 101 members, 1st time guests, 101 attendees not joining is well received. 
  • The last 101 class results had 31 new members, 4 new choir members, Presbyterian Women, Operation Homebound, a Photographer and a tech person.

  • Caring People Ministry had 15 receptions and served 2300 people; securing volunteers are 30, 430 volunteer hours, and have 86 volunteers.

Worship: Elder Rose Gorman

  • Held meeting with Jim Coleman and Pat Schoch to discuss usher training and emergency disaster procedures.  We have scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, July 14, in the Fellowship Hall beginning at 1:00 p.m. lasting through 3:00 p.m. to update all ushers on these procedures.  Notices will begin appearing in the bulletin and newsletter next Sunday, June 28th.  Pat, Jim and Rose will conduct the meeting. 
  • Elder Rose Gorman made a motion to change the starting time of the first service from 8:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. effective July 19, 2015.  Motion was seconded, discussed and passed unanimously.

  • Request was made to increase vacation for new senior pastor from 4 to 6 weeks. After discussion, it was determined that vacation would be 4 weeks at start and reviewed after one year.  Motion was made, seconded and approved. 
  • Session may receive an email to call congregational meeting after 3rd service May 31.  
  • On Arbor Day, Thursday, April 23rd, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. there will be a tree planting in honor or Denny.

  • Transportation Ministry – contact person is Ron VanGelderen.  Drivers are always needed. 40-50 people have been transported this year.
  • Prayer Chain Ministry – Marguerite Sharp is contact person.  Prayer requests are constantly asked for.
  • Extended Table Ministry – Dee Adams is contact person.  458 people received communion in 2014.
  • Toby’s Angels Ministry – Jean and Don Beckett contact people.  More “angels” are needed.  
  • Stephen Ministry – Ann Bierma is team leader. More people are needed.

  • The MIF with the proposed change for the position and a salary range of $90,000 - $100,000 was subsequently unanimously approved by Session.

November 18, 2014, 3:00 P.M.

Call to Order: Stated session meeting was convened in the Peace Room at 3:00 p.m. A quorum was present. The meeting was called to order. Pastor Dennison opened with prayer and led in the recitation of the elder’s covenant. Elder Jim Crutchfield led the devotion.

Order of the Day:

Church Administrator’s Report by Tom Ledoux:

  • Progress made on plans for sharing vision and mission statements after 1/1/15, along with a 5 week series beginning 1/18/15 and culminating with celebration on Sunday, 2/15/15. This will include stewardship considerations.
  • A motion was made to approve scheduling the annual meeting at the FAB Meeting, Tuesday, 2/17/15 at 6:00 p.m. It was approved by the elders.
  • Strategic planning committee has begun meeting.
  • Pastor’s weekly e-mails have begun.
  • All worship announcements should be submitted to Mike Snow.
  • Search for permanent choir director is continuing.
  • A discussion of Senior Pastor Job Description was conducted.
  • The Presbytery policy regarding the elevation of Associate Pastor to Senior Pastor was discussed at length.

Ministry Areas

Worship: Elder Rose Gorman

  • Presbyterian Women request the use of Fellowship Hall and kitchen for PW of Central Florida Presbytery on August 20, 2015. It is a Bible study event from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  They would need support personnel and will pay for same.
  • Requested approval for a floral dedication policy. 
  • Christmas Eve services are properly staffed. 
  • Sharon Hay will assist in placement of poinsettias in sanctuary.

Ministry: Elder Donna Gibons

  • New elders for 2015: Jim Crutchfield, Youth and Children; Bob Peacock, Adults; Charlotte Hornback, Ministry. Approved by the Elders.

Youth & Children Discipleship : Elder Jim Crutchfield

  • The youth programs are extremely busy in myriad activities. These activities include: Off-Campus, as On-Campus activities, work, fundraising, Bible Studies and entertaining.
  • They are building a data base of useful contact information to reach out to area families, inviting new families to all their activities here at North Lake.
  • “Teens For Hire” is progressing very well.
  • Mike and Jim working together to clarify their roles in this ministry.
  • Christmas decorations are going up. Check bulletins for info.
  • Christmas Night at North Lake progressing well.

Mission Outreach: Elder Jack Kiley

  • “Blues Brothers” Concert money to Ocala Forest

Pastoral Care: Elder Lynn Miller

  • All ministries need volunteers.
  • December 11 is the Advent Service of Remembrance.
  • Stephen Ministry commissioned 4 new team members.

Congregational Life: Elder Judy Etheridge

  • Suggested special offerings be divided more equitably.
  • 23 new members from the 101 class.
