Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I would like to share with you, information about NLPC’s Stephen Ministry Program. Stephen Ministry is our congregation’s one-to-one caregiving ministry. Our Stephen Ministers are Christian men and women volunteers that come from all walks of life with one commonality, a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need.

In order to become a Stephen Minister, they are required to attend 50 hours of training. The training teaches the skills necessary for our Stephen Ministers to provide one-to-one care to people who are experiencing difficulties in life such as a death of a loved one, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation or separation due to military deployment, hospitalization, or other life changing difficulty.

Our Stephen Minister begins a caring relationship when he or she is paired with a person going through a difficult period in life. The Stephen Minister then meets with that person on a weekly basis to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. Males are matched with males and females with females. The caring relationship is confidential and lasts as long as the person is in need of care. Our Stephen Ministers meet twice monthly and participate in group supervision with our Stephen Ministry leaders who provide guidance and support. During the second meeting of the month, continuing educational classes are provided by the Leaders, or guest speakers from community resources, that help enhance our skills and the services we provide to others.

The Stephen Ministry is supervised by Stephen Leaders who not only went through the 50 hours of initial training, but are also required to attend a 7-day leadership course. The course consists of teaching skills needed to operate and supervise a successful Stephen Ministry program.

If you would like a compassionate Stephen Minister to walk with you through troubled times in your life, or have a calling to become a Stephen Minister, and want to attend our fall training course, call Pastor Lynn Miller at 352-753-8484. (Stephen Ministry calls are confidential.)

Blessings,
Dr. Bob Hazlett
Stephen Ministry Team Leader
